Nasce, a Firenze, in una famiglia di piccola nobiltà che parteggiava per i guelfi. La città sta vivendo un periodo di tumulti provocati dalla rivalità tra due potenti famiglie i Cerchi e i Donati; Dante si schiera dalla parte dei Cerchi. venne inviato a Roma come ambasciatore e sulla via del ritorno venne a sapere che i Donati avevano vinto e che lo avevano condannato a morte e avevano confiscato tutti i suoi beni così fu costretto a passare di corte in corte visitando alcune città tra le quali: Verona, Treviso, Padova e Venezia. Morì infine a Ravenna forse per delle febbri malariche che aveva contratto viaggiando.
